Jan Eliot’s funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister…and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom… it’s all here in Stone Soup.
Uncle Buck: My Thoughts
Buck Russell is not the most reliable and trustworthy person around, and when Cindy Russell (his sister in law) and Bob Russell (his brother) turn to him as a last resort to look after their children — 7-year-old Miles (who turns 8 a bit later), 6-year-old Maizy and 16-year-old Tia — Buck agrees to fill in, while Cindy and Bob go to Indianapolis to visit Cindy’s ill father. While over at the house, Buck does his usual routines — including going to smoky bowling alleys and smoking cigars. However, the longer he is around with Miles and Maizy, and the more he witnesses Tia slowly get seduced by her boyfriend Bug, Buck learns about responsibility and how there is more to life than just being an eligible bachelor and having fun. Bob Russell (Garret M. Brown), his wife Cindy (Elaine Bromka), and their three kids, Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly), Miles (Macaulay Culkin) and Maizy (Gaby Hoffman) have recently moved from Indianapolis to the Chicago suburbs because of Bob’s having gotten a
John Dillinger: My Thoughts
If I was asked what my favorite scene would be from the 2009 film Public Enemies, it would be the scene where John and Evelyn “Billie” Frechette are on the beach at night. The reason would be mostly because of how John posed the question of “You want to take that ride with me?” I can’t imagine any woman turning him down after his asking a question like that; in fact, their answer would be a definite “yes” right there. Plus, as a matter of fact, any woman would be putty in John’s hands — especially if he was played by Johnny Depp, for that matter. (Of course, I can also see his John Dillinger as kind of like Dracula, since John could be seen as a vampire — but in the financial sense, however, as he did drain the banks of their money, after all.)
Dracula in the Buffyverse
The first time I saw the Season 5 episode Buffy vs. Dracula, I took a liking to how Rudolf Martin did a phenomenal job with bringing Dracula to life in the episode (and still do, as a matter of fact). Sometimes, I wish that Dracula made another appearance during the rest of Season 5, as well as Seasons 6 and 7. From my perspective, he would’ve done really well with being a great ally to the Scooby Gang, and would have first helped Buffy and Dawn cope with the death of their mother (who had invited Dracula in for coffee) in the episode The Body. Then, when it came to the battle with Glory in the episode The Gift, Dracula would’ve stopped Buffy from dying a second time by first taking some of her blood — which she would let him do beforehand — and telling both Dawn and Buffy to be brave and live for his sake before finally taking the swan dive into the portal himself (although he survives, as the portal can’t kill him because of his being a vampire). Season 6 would have begun with
Stephanie Tanner
Stephanie “Steph” Tanner is part of a big family, and she doesn’t want to get lost in the shuffle — so she’s developed a sassy, outgoing personality. She’s a fan of sarcastic wisecracks, because people always seem to laugh when she says unexpected things. When she likes someone, she wants to know as much as possible about them. So she has highly-developed eavesdropping skills. (It’s not Stephanie’s fault if she overhears a secret, though. If they wanted it to stay private, they should’ve whispered.)
